Helping Please Touch Museum bring an educational brand to life
Background
Please Touch Museum is a long-celebrated children’s museum in Philadelphia. In 2021, their team began working with U.S. Department of Education researchers on an exciting new project: a kindergarten readiness program.
The team’s research led to an important decision. While most other programs focused on educating children, the Museum’s would support both the children and their caregivers. After months of planning, a pilot run proved successful. It was time to launch the program with an official brand.
The challenge
The program needed a clear, unique identity — to engage new participants, and to carve out a space among existing Museum programs.
For the former, the Museum team wanted a brand that’d stand out from other pre-K programs. For the latter, the brand needed to fit into a clear organizational structure — alongside other Museum programs, and under the larger Museum brand. Finally, the identity needed to be open-ended enough for expansion as the program grew.
Our solution
The FVM team attended a kindergarten readiness session in person, where we spoke directly with children and their caregivers about their experiences. We gathered more information through a brand strategy session with Museum leadership, in addition to reviewing existing materials and other organizations’ brands and approaches.
Finally, we presented our findings and initial recommendations to the Museum team.
The results
After narrowing down our initial options, we named the program Kinder Launch. Paired with a playful logo showing a pencil blasting skyward, the identity reflects the excitement of starting a new adventure.
The brand further emphasizes playfulness and inclusivity through welcoming language, dynamic photos, and hand-drawn patterns. To contextualize the brand, we also created a name for the Museum’s full set of developmental programs: Journey Together.
